Background

The Ryde Centre of RDA began in 1984 in the grounds of the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney. Due to redevelopment of our former ‘home’, we are currently fundraising and seeking planning approval to develop our new Centre nearby at Marsfield Park.

As we get closer to the opening of our new Centre, we will be able to provide more information on our hours of operation etc, however, as with every RDA Centre, we will need the support and assistance of many volunteers and will most likely need to find some new horses to add to our team as it has been decided that some of our older ‘boys’ should be retired to new homes.

If you would like to assist us is the building of our new Centre, would like to register as a future volunteer, rider or coach, please contact us using the details listed below.

For your information, the following details are how our Centre at Putney ran (and we hope to have similar arrangements in place for our new centre):

During normal operation we had approximately 60 volunteers per week, which includes 10 coaches, 3 trainee coaches and approximately 100 riders per week. Some of the volunteers were using the activity as one of their placements under the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

We held classes in the morning from Tuesday to Saturday and we had a “Maintenance” team that works on Monday. The Maintenance Team feed and muck out the paddocks and do any odd jobs such as mowing the lawns, fixing fences etc. We also had a feeding roster for Sunday.

Our horses stay at the Centre all year except during the Christmas break when they are turned out on a rural property for a well-earned rest. During other school holidays they get some time off each week when a “day coach” may decide that they are going to enjoy a small break.

We are currently in the process of relocating to Marsfield Park and have yet to confirm our days and hours of operation.
