History

RDA NSW Illawarra started with the support of Kiama Council on the 27th November 1981 with about 12-15 members. With no venue of our own, we used the local pony club grounds and borrowed horses. We ran one day a week and had six riders. Only one week later we were bombarded with about fifty or sixty riders and as they say the rest is history.

The centre has had it’s own grounds of 27 acres since 1987 with over another 100 acres on lease, and now operates four days a week. Our riders range from primary school students through to adult riders. Illawarra covers an area between Helensburgh, Gerroa and west to Picton. As RDA expanded so did our name from RDA NSW Kiama to RDA NSW Kiama & Illawarra Centre and then to RDA NSW Illawarra in 2008.

Volunteer helpers are always needed. You don’t need horse knowledge as training is provided. There are many jobs for those people who do not like or feel comfortable around horses, such as helping in the kitchen or out around the paddocks.

We are a Non Profit organisation that rely on Fundraising, Donations and Sponsors for our ongoing survival.

Without this help and our incredible Volunteers our Centre could not operate.
